Chapter 2

She felt that this must be her whole life and she would die without regrets. But just nine days later, Jazzy proposed to break up.

The reason was: "You don't love me anymore."

"If you love me, why don’t you want to drink with me, sleep with me, go wild with me and be crazy with me? If you love me, you will accept everything about me and enjoy everything about me—my strengths, my flaws, what I like and what I hate. You have to embrace them all. If you love me, you will accept everything unconditionally, won’t you?"

That was the first time Wanda, known as the strongest academic achiever, had been asked a question she could not answer.

For the first time in her life, she couldn’t solve the equation. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t figure it out. She truly didn’t know how to answer this question.

Until three days later, when Wanda realized she truly couldn’t lose Jazzy. She began trying to accept the answer he had given her and do what he asked.

Until now. Wanda felt she had done everything Jazzy demanded, enduring all his rationality and irrationality. The 999th breakup. Just one more time to make it perfect.

She was full of expectations—yet she heard another answer from Jazzy, "I am your only one, but you are no longer mine. I love you. I love you deeply... but I have also fallen in love with someone else—and I married her. I will not give you the 1000th chance to break up. From now on, you and she must both stay with me forever."

What a ridiculous, cruelly ironic answer. The second breakup. The second heartbreak.

This time, Wanda found she had no tears left. Perhaps they had already dried up because of Jazzy. Or maybe when pain reached its extreme, all that remained was emptiness.

At last, Wanda understood. "So, the answer to this question was never what Jazzy said. His answer was not the only standard answer."

Wanda turned around and made a phone call. "Mom, I want to go abroad... to your place."

Her mother sounded surprised. "Wanda, are you really willing?"

Wanda could no longer suppress the pain in her heart. "Mom, I want to stay with you—and never leave again."

Her mother spoke with tender concern. "Wanda, don’t cry. No matter what happens, Mom will protect you. I will never let you suffer again. I’ll start preparing everything for you to come abroad immediately."

"Okay."

After hanging up the phone, Wanda returned home.

Her mother’s secretary sent a message: [Miss, your procedures for going abroad and settling in have all been arranged. If there is nothing urgent, your flight ticket will be booked for two weeks from now.]

In the past, Wanda would have thought two weeks was short. But now, it felt unbearably long.

She dismissed the nanny, the cook and the housekeeper in the villa. Then she contacted an agent and put the villa up for sale. There was no need to return. She didn’t want to see the memories here anymore.

On the third day, Jazzy couldn’t wait to call.

"Wanda, what are you doing? Why haven’t you come to coax me back? This is our 999th breakup—just one more and it’ll be the 1000th time."

Listening to Jazzy’s urging voice over the phone, Wanda felt the bitter irony. No couple would ever looked forward to a breakup—yet she had looked forward to it for five years. No couple could break up countless times and then return to each other. But she had endured it 999 times.
