Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above our table caught the dim restaurant lighting, casting fragmented shadows across the white linen tablecloth. I rested my left hand on my lap, my thumb gently tracing the curve of my stomach beneath my silk dress.

Three months.

We were here to celebrate, though the guest list hadn¡¯t been my choice. Liam had insisted we tell Sophia first. Not my parents. Not my sister. His childhood friend.

"I¡¯m just so thrilled for you guys," Sophia said. She took a sip of her martini, her eyes darting between Liam and me. Her smile was perfectly practiced, tight around the edges. "A baby. It really changes the entire dynamic, doesn't it?"

Before I could form a polite response, a deafening crack split the air.

It didn't sound like an explosion. It sounded like the earth itself tearing apart. The floor beneath my chair dropped. The ceiling simply vanished, replaced by a terrifying wave of plaster, steel, and darkness.

The impact hit me before I could scream. The heavy oak dining table violently collapsed downward, pinning my left leg against the shattered floor tiles. A jagged piece of concrete slammed into my thigh.

Dust choked my lungs. The smell of ruptured gas lines and pulverized drywall filled the dark space.

"Liam!" I coughed, tasting copper and dirt. My voice was completely lost in the chaotic symphony of screeching metal, shattering glass, and the screams of other patrons.

The pain in my leg was a blinding, white-hot flare. I tried to pull myself backward, but the weight of the concrete and oak was immovable. I pressed my hands over my stomach, a raw instinct taking over. The baby. Protect the baby.

Through the thick haze of dust, emergency lights flickered to life, casting an eerie red glow over the wreckage.

About twenty feet away, I saw him.

Liam was already on his feet. He was brushing debris off his shoulders, his posture shifting instantly into the familiar, rigid stance of a trained Search and Rescue captain. He scanned the ruined dining room with professional, cold calculation.

Relief hit my chest so hard I sobbed. He was a professional. He knew exactly how to handle this. He would get the beam off me. He would get us out.

"Liam! Here!" I screamed, waving my free hand.

His head snapped in my direction. Our eyes met across the chaotic ruin. He saw me pinned. He saw the blood pooling on my torn dress. He saw me clutching my stomach.

But then, a sharp cough drew his attention to the right.

Sophia was sitting up near the shattered entrance. She was completely free of the heavy debris. A thin line of blood trickled from a minor cut on her forehead, but she was pushing herself up, bearing her own weight.

"Liam," she whimpered, her voice breathy and small. "My head hurts."

I watched my husband¡¯s face change. The professional detachment vanished, replaced by a raw, frantic terror I had never seen him direct at me.

"Sophia!"

He didn't run to his trapped, pregnant wife. He bolted toward the woman who was already standing.

"Liam!" I shrieked. The beam shifted above me, grinding my fractured bone. I gasped in agony. "Liam, my leg! I can't move! The baby!"

He stopped and looked back at me. I saw the calculation in his eyes. I was buried under hundreds of pounds of debris. Extracting me would take time, equipment, and effort. Sophia was right there, easily accessible, needing nothing more than an arm around her shoulder.

"I'll come back for you!" Liam yelled over the blaring alarms.

He didn't wait for my response. He wrapped his arms around Sophia¡¯s waist, pulling her close against his chest. She buried her face in his neck, her arms wrapping tightly around his shoulders. He kicked a piece of drywall out of the way and guided her out through the jagged hole where the front doors used to be.

He left me in the dark.

I stopped screaming. The silence that fell over my immediate corner of the wreckage was heavier than the concrete pinning my leg. I stared at the empty space where my husband had just stood.

Ten minutes later, the first responders found me. Two men in heavy turnout gear used a hydraulic jack to lift the oak table and the concrete slab off my leg.

"Ma'am, stay with us," a female EMT said, shining a penlight into my eyes as they strapped me to a backboard. "What's your name?"

"Chloe," I whispered. My voice sounded dead, stripped of all emotion. "Chloe Davies. I'm three months pregnant."

The EMT¡¯s expression tightened. "We're getting you to Seattle General right now. Do you have family we can call?"

"No," I said flatly.

They loaded me onto a gurney and pushed me out into the cool night air. The street was a sea of flashing red and blue lights. As they lifted my stretcher into the back of the ambulance, I turned my head.

Fifty yards away, standing by a fire truck, was Liam.

He had a thick blanket wrapped around Sophia¡¯s shoulders. He was holding a gauze pad to the small cut on her forehead, leaning in close, speaking to her in low, soothing tones. She was nodding, leaning her weight against him.

He never looked toward the ambulances. He never looked for me.

The ambulance doors slammed shut, cutting off the view.

"Blood pressure is dropping," the EMT noted, hooking up an IV line. "Stay awake, Chloe."

I didn't close my eyes. I didn't cry. The tears simply weren't there. As the siren wailed and the ambulance sped toward the hospital, the confusion and panic evaporated. It was replaced by a sudden, freezing clarity.

Liam had made his choice. Now, I would make mine.
