After My Husband Abandoned Our Sick Daughter for Another Girl

9 / 10.0
Inside a freezing trailer, a mother watches her daughter's fever climb while every signed form she sends to Corbin comes back unanswered. Transfer papers, housing aid, medication requests—all vanish into bureaucratic silence. Then a neighbor's letter exposes the truth: he has built a life elsewhere, with someone else. This modern romance story strips away pretense to reveal the brutal weight of neglect and a mother's fierce determination to save what remains.

After My Husband Abandoned Our Sick Daughter for Another Girl Chapter 1

The wind shook the aluminum walls of the trailer. It was always cold in November, but inside, the chill felt deeper.

I sat at the small kitchen table. In front of me were three neat stacks of paper. Transfer applications. Housing benefit forms. A special requisition slip for Lilly’s fever medication. Every single one had been mailed to Corbin’s office at the State Department in Washington. None of them had been signed.

Just yesterday, our neighbor mentioned a letter from her sister out East. Her sister worked in a government typing pool. She told everyone how wonderful Corbin White was. How within three days of Zora Ellis arriving in the city, Corbin had secured her a flat near the park and hired a private tutor. Zora was twenty. She had a light cough and a delicate constitution.

My four-year-old daughter, Lilly, coughed from the back bunk. It was a raspy, shallow sound.

The door opened with a groan, and Corbin stepped inside.

He looked like he belonged on a billboard. His wool overcoat was thick and black. He smelled like expensive tobacco and hotel soap. In his leather-gloved hands, he carried a gold box of imported chocolates.

"Hailey," he said softly. He set the box on the scarred laminate table. "I only have until tomorrow morning. The Undersecretary needs me back by Monday."

I looked at the chocolates. Then I looked at him.

"Lilly is sleeping," I said. "Her fever came back on Tuesday."

Corbin took off his gloves. He looked around our tiny kitchen, his eyes avoiding the water stains on the ceiling. "I know it’s hard, Hailey. But we have to think about optics."

"Optics," I repeated.

"A man in my position cannot show favoritism," he said smoothly. He used his diplomat voice, calm and reasoned. "The blacklist nearly destroyed me. If I rush my wife and child into government quarters, people will talk. They will say I abuse public resources. My integrity has to be beyond reproach."

He used the word *integrity* like a shield.

I looked down at my hands. They were red and raw from scrubbing laundry for the base families down the road. My knuckles were swollen. Seven years ago, my father—a county judge—told me not to marry a disgraced man. I defied him. I lived in this tin can. I canned vegetables until my thumbs split so Corbin could eat while he brooded.

"Zora Ellis has an apartment," I said quietly.

Corbin’s face went rigid. "That is entirely different."

"She has an apartment and a private tutor," I continued, tapping the papers. "Her paperwork took three days. My transfer has been sitting on your desk for eleven months. Lilly’s medication request has been there for six. When is it our turn, Corbin?"

His composed mask cracked. His eyes turned ice-cold.

"Have you no shame?" he hissed, keeping his voice down so Lilly wouldn’t wake. "Warren Ellis died clearing my name. Zora is an orphan. She has nobody in this world. You have a home. You have this town. To sit there and count pennies against a grieving girl shows a complete lack of civic-mindedness."

"Lilly is your daughter," I whispered.

"And I provide for her," he snapped. "I sent twenty dollars last month. Don't let your jealousy turn you ugly, Hailey. It is unbecoming of a diplomat's wife."

He turned and walked to the narrow cot in the corner, turning his back to me.

He was gone before dawn. He didn’t wait for Lilly to wake up. He didn't kiss her cheek. The gold box of chocolates sat unopened on the grease-stained counter.

When the sun came up, I took out my old leather notebook from university. My botany notes filled the front pages—pressed leaves, soil charts, forgotten dreams. On a clean page in the back, my fountain pen scratched against the paper.

*Dear Professor Stephens,* I wrote. *I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inquire if your research team still requires a junior field botanist.*

I didn't beg. I didn't mention Corbin. I just stated my qualifications.

Two days later, I walked into town through the freezing slush. My boots leaked. I walked past the depot to Ford’s General Store to buy canned beans and milk.

Charlie Ford stood behind the counter. For years, Charlie had sneered at me for falling from the judge’s fine house into a rusted trailer. But today, she was quiet.

A traveling clerk by the stove was talking loudly about Washington. "Saw that Mr. White at a reception last month," the man laughed. "Sharp fellow. The whole department talks about his spotless ethics. Won't take a nickel he didn't earn."

Charlie looked past the man, right at me. She looked at my thin coat. She looked at my cracked boots, and the three cans of beans I set on the wooden counter.

"Put it on my tab, Charlie," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "Please."

Charlie didn't mock me. Her mouth pressed into a thin, tight line. Her eyes were hard as flint, but not at me. She reached under the counter, pulled out a tin of lard and two cans of peaches, and shoved them into my paper bag.

"Take them," Charlie said, her voice rough. She didn't write anything in the ledger. "Go on home to Lilly, Hailey."

I nodded, clutching the heavy brown bag to my chest, and walked back out into the cold.
