Chapter 1

At the airport, I ran straight into Zach Martin, the man who had left me at the altar two years ago to accompany his foster sister to Apania to watch elephants.

I had on sunglasses, yet he recognized me instantly in the crowd.

“Tina, I’m back to marry you.”

I paused for a moment. There was a flicker of doubt in my eyes. “You’re…”

He gave me a helpless smile.

“Hey, come on. Don’t be mad. I didn’t mean to disappear like that. After taking Yvette to see the elephants, she wanted to stick around and document everything. She’s my only sister. I had to spoil her a little.

“After two years of working on the project and finishing the shoot, I rushed straight back to fulfill our engagement!”

Only then did it dawn on me that this dark, scrawny man, flashing a mouthful of white teeth, was actually my former fiancé!

Wait. Did nobody tell him that on the very day he ran away, I married his uncle instead?

The airport was swarming with people. Zach Martin had a limited-edition bag in one hand and was pushing a suitcase with the other.

Yvette, who had also become tanned after two years in Apania, was sitting on the suitcase, being pushed along by Zach.

Two years in the sun had left them looking like they had spent the same time mining coal.

Back then, Zach was fair, handsome, and in great shape. Otherwise, I would not have agreed to the arranged marriage.

However, now…

Good thing he was not my husband.

I slid off my sunglasses and forced a polite smile.

“Sorry, it’s been a while. You both look so different. I didn’t recognize you at first.”

Yvette, as sharp-tongued as ever, sneered, “Don’t pretend! You came here just to pick up Zach, didn’t you? If I hadn’t dropped my phone and lost contact with everyone after going abroad, you would've tracked us down in Apania long ago!

“I really don’t get what Zach sees in you. How could he want to marry someone with nothing but a pretty face?”

She turned her head away in a huff.

Zach ruffled her hair and poked her nose helplessly. “Once I marry Tina, she’ll be your sister-in-law. You'd better show some respect. Or else, there won't be an Eronia trip for you next year."

After calming Yvette, he turned to me and explained, “She’s just a kid with a temper. As you know, Damian died protecting me in a car accident, and she lost her father because of it. When we’re married, I want you to help take care of her and treat her like your own little sister.”

Did he even realize the nonsense he was spouting? I elegantly rolled my eyes and held up my wedding ring.

“Mr. Martin, thanks for refusing to marry me back then. It led me to a man a thousand times better than you. And please don’t get any ideas. I’m here to pick up my husband today.”

Zach froze for a second, then squinted at me. He raised an eyebrow as he smiled.

“Tina… do you think I’m stupid? Our wedding two years ago shook the whole city. Everyone knows you're my bride. Running off was my fault, yes, but your reputation took a dip afterward. If you don't marry into the Martin family, who else would want you?”

That was why he ran... He was convinced no one else would want me!

He really overestimated himself and underestimated me.

His grandfather, Alex, had cleaned up his mess. To appease the Meyer family, Alex even personally transferred Zach’s shares to me.

Apparently, Zach still had no clue. It was not surprising at all.

Zach had not contacted the Martin family for two years because of Yvette—not even a single phone call.

I could not help but wonder if he would still be smiling back at the Martin residence tonight.
