Abandoned at the Altar Chapter 1

The Fifth Avenue wedding venue glowed in the soft light of dawn as I adjusted the last orchid in a crystal vase. My fingers trembled slightly—not from exhaustion after the sleepless night of preparations, but from a giddy, almost desperate excitement. After five years of waiting, of promises made and broken, Nathan had finally agreed to marry me.

'Just a little higher on the left,' I whispered to myself, tilting my head to examine the arrangement. Perfect. Everything had to be perfect today.

The grand ballroom was transformed into the elegant, timeless space I'd envisioned since I was a little girl in Ohio dreaming of my future. Ivory silk draperies cascaded from ceiling to floor, catching the morning light that streamed through the tall windows. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above tables adorned with orchids and roses—Nathan's favorite. I'd chosen every detail with him in mind.

'Claire, honey?' My mother's voice echoed through the nearly empty ballroom. She stood in the doorway, already dressed in her powder-blue mother-of-the-bride outfit, her face a mixture of pride and concern. 'You need to start getting ready. The makeup artist is waiting.'

'Just one more minute,' I promised, adjusting a ribbon on a nearby chair. 'I want everything to be—'

'Perfect. I know.' Mom smiled, crossing the room to take my hands in hers. 'But the bride is what everyone will be looking at, not the flowers.'

I nodded, allowing her to lead me toward the bridal suite. My heart fluttered in my chest. This was compensation, I knew that. Nathan had only proposed after I'd given Sarah my business proposal—the one I'd worked on for two years. But it was worth it. We were finally going to be husband and wife.

The bridal suite buzzed with activity. My cousins from Columbus, my aunt from Cincinnati, and my childhood best friend who'd flown in from Cleveland all crowded around, exclaiming over my dress hanging on the wall.

'Oh, Claire-bear!' Dad's voice cracked with emotion when he saw me. He'd aged in the last few years, his hair grayer than I remembered. 'You look just like your grandmother.'

As the makeup artist worked her magic, I closed my eyes, letting the chatter of my family wash over me. They'd traveled so far, spent so much money they didn't have to be here. For me. For this day.

'Has Nathan texted?' I asked my cousin Melissa, who was in charge of my phone.

'Not yet,' she said cheerfully. 'But you know men on their wedding day. Probably still figuring out his cufflinks.'

I nodded, ignoring the small knot forming in my stomach. Nathan was probably busy. Important surgeons had important things to do, even on their wedding day.

The hours ticked by. My hair was styled into an elegant updo, tiny diamonds woven through the strands. The dress—a fitted mermaid silhouette with delicate lace detailing—hugged my body perfectly. I looked like the bride I'd always wanted to be.

'It's almost time,' my mother whispered, fastening my grandmother's pearl necklace around my throat. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears. 'You're so beautiful.'

The ceremony was scheduled for 2:00 PM. At 1:45, there was still no word from Nathan.

'Call him,' I told Melissa, the knot in my stomach growing tighter.

'It goes straight to voicemail,' she reported after trying three times.

At 2:15, the wedding planner I'd hired to manage the day (so I could be a bride, not a coordinator) poked her head in. 'Claire? The guests are getting restless.'

'He's coming,' I insisted, my voice higher than normal. 'He's just... running late.'

At 2:30, my phone buzzed. My heart leaped—finally!—but Melissa's face fell as she looked at the screen.

'What is it?' I demanded, reaching for the phone.

'Claire, maybe you shouldn't—'

I snatched it from her hand. There on the screen was an Instagram notification: @SarahChenMD had posted a photo. With trembling fingers, I opened the app.

The image was simple: a positive pregnancy test, held in manicured fingers I recognized all too well. The caption read: 'The greatest gift @DrNathanPierce could ever give me. #BabyOnBoard #ForeverFamily'

The room spun around me. The phone slipped from my fingers, clattering to the floor as my knees gave way. I collapsed in a heap of white satin and lace, gasping for air that wouldn't come.

Distantly, I heard the commotion—my mother's cry of alarm, my cousins' shocked whispers, the wedding planner's frantic questions. But all I could see was that plastic stick, that terrible caption, and the knowledge that crashed through me like a wrecking ball: Nathan was never coming.

The door burst open, and my father rushed in, his face ashen. 'Claire?' he knelt beside me, his weathered hands grasping mine. 'What's happened?'

I couldn't speak. I could only point to the phone on the floor, the screen still illuminated with the evidence of my complete humiliation. As Dad picked it up, his expression transformed from confusion to rage, then to a devastating pity that broke something fundamental inside me.

'Everyone's waiting,' I whispered, tears finally spilling down my carefully made-up face. 'Everyone's waiting for a wedding that's never going to happen.'
