Chapter 2

My heart pounded as Derrick’s phone blinked on the table. For as long as I could remember, I had been loyal to him, giving him every ounce of trust I had. But today, my patience had run out. I lowered myself into a chair, careful not to strain my growing belly. I needed to know the truth.

I started with the obvious passwords, dates that had meant everything to us, like our anniversary, my birthday, even his pack initiation date. Nothing. But then, with a stroke of grim inspiration, I typed in the date from Samantha’s ultrasound photo, the one I’d seen her proudly share on social media. The screen unlocked.

My pulse quickened as I opened his messaging app. Samantha’s profile picture, sitting at the top like a mocking reminder of the betrayal. I braced myself as I scrolled through the messages, each line a new wound. “Darling, I miss you,” she had written. Derrick replied, “Soon, my love. We’ll be together soon.” His words, so sickeningly sweet, were painfully familiar. They used to be mine. Now they were for Samantha—the rival she-wolf carrying his child.

I opened Derrick’s banking app, feeling my stomach churn. Countless transactions such as pregnancy supplements, skincare products, and luxurious gifts filled the screen. It was all shipped to her address. His email notifications confirmed it. Rage and heartbreak warred within me, but I focused, carefully taking screenshots of every piece of evidence. He wouldn’t take me for a fool.

Finished, I placed the phone back on the table, feeling utterly drained. I lay down, closing my eyes to the rising anger and hurt that washed over me like a tidal wave.

Seven years I’d stood by Derrick’s side, believing we had a future together, a family to build. Now, he was tearing it all apart. The pain was unbearable, but beneath it, I wasn’t just an abandoned mate; I am the Alpha’s daughter. I would not allow anyone, especially Derrick, to make a mockery of me and my bloodline.

Moments later, Derrick came out of the bathroom, his phone in hand. He glanced at me, and for a fleeting second, his face softened. But then his phone buzzed, and his expression changed, brightening as he answered it. He stepped out onto the balcony, speaking in a gentle tone, his face filled with guilt mixed with eagerness.

From my spot on the bed, I watched him through the cracked door, unable to hear his words but seeing his smile.

When he returned to the bedroom, he placed a hand on my shoulder. “Charlotte, I have to step out for an urgent project with the pack. I won’t be long.”

I looked up at him, unable to mask the pain in my eyes. “I don’t feel well, Derrick. Could you stay with me tonight?” I asked softly, holding onto the faint hope that he might choose me for once, that he might still care.

He gave me a strained smile, barely meeting my gaze. “I can’t, my love. This project is crucial,” he said, glancing away. “I’ll ask my mother to come over and keep you company.”

As he gathered his things, I whispered, “Drive safe.” He nodded, barely acknowledging me, and left without looking back.

The second the front door clicked shut, I grabbed my jacket, covered my belly as best as I could, then slipped out of the house to hail a cab.

“Follow that car,” I instructed the driver as I climbed in. He raised an eyebrow but didn’t ask questions, steering us quietly behind Derrick’s car. My hands tightened into fists as I watched Derrick’s car navigate through the streets, finally reaching the border of the Crimsoneye pack’s territory.

When the driver stopped, hidden by the trees, I slipped out and watched from a distance. Derrick stepped out of his car, his face lighting up as Samantha emerged from the shadows. I felt my chest tighten as I saw him reach for her belly, his hand caressing the life growing within her. It was a tenderness that should have been mine.

I raised my phone, recording every moment of their meeting.

My child kicked within me, as if sensing my turmoil, urging me to protect the future we still had. Tears welled in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I wasn’t here to mourn—I was here to collect every last shred of proof.

In the distance, Derrick laughed, drawing Samantha close, his mouth moving in words that used to be mine.

What matters is I had all the evidence I needed now. I would expose him, reclaim my honor, and defend my child’s future.

As Derrick led Samantha back to her car, I clenched my fists. This wasn’t the end. It was the beginning.

Lowering my phone, I took a steadying breath, my heart filled with a newfound purpose. I would make Derrick answer for his betrayal, and I would ensure my child would never feel the sting of his father’s treachery.

With one last glance at the oblivious pair, I whispered to my unborn child, “We’re going to fight for our future, and we’re going to win.” Then, slipping into the shadows, I turned back toward the life that awaited me. A life I would rebuild, stronger than ever.
