A Parasite's Public Reckoning

8.2 / 10.0
After a decade of serving as her fiancé Graham Walsh's personal ATM and nanny, his latest demand for a 'break' is the final straw. Instead of begging, she leaves their Boston apartment, cancels their Newport wedding, and stops paying for his mother's luxury nursing home. After blocking his demanding sister, she accepts a promotion in Austin. Now, the self-proclaimed Harvard elite must find a way to fund his glamorous lifestyle and handle his family and 'study buddy' Sadie on his own.

A Parasite's Public Reckoning Chapter 1

After my fiancé, Graham Walsh, told me for the umpteenth time, "We need to take a break," his voice laced with the same old exhaustion, I didn't plead or grovel the way I had for the past ten years.

Without a word, I packed my bags and moved out of our Boston apartment.

I quietly began to cut him out of my life.

On the first day, I contacted the wedding venue in Newport and canceled our long-planned, repeatedly postponed reservation.

On the second day, I informed the high-end nursing home where his mother, Carol Walsh, was staying that I was canceling the automatic payment authorization and would no longer act as the guarantor for her expenses. I also blocked his sister, Morgan Walsh, and her endless requests on Venmo.

On the third day, I accepted a promotion and transfer from my company's headquarters, flying to Austin as a Regional Director to spearhead a new project.

As I settled into my seat on the plane to Austin, I couldn't help but wonder.

Without me—his on-demand ATM and free nanny for the last decade—how would Graham, the so-called "Harvard elite," possibly maintain his glamorous lifestyle?

How would he handle his mother in her luxury nursing home, his insatiable sister, and his treasured 'study buddy,' Sadie?

Good luck, Graham.

"I just need to confirm, Ms. Sinclair—the contract states that canceling at this stage forfeits twenty percent of your deposit. If you're okay with that, please sign here."

After I confirmed, the planner handed me a tablet and stylus. She patiently explained the terms one last time, pointing to the highlighted signature line. She was young, and an undisguised curiosity glinted in her eyes. I could tell she was dying to ask why, but professionalism kept her from prying.

It wasn't hard to understand why.

I had booked this venue, which overlooked the Atlantic, three years ago. My fiancé, Graham Walsh, and I had reviewed design proposals twice and even done a complete walk-through of the ceremony and reception plans. But every single time, right at the final moment of confirming the date, he would pump the brakes, claiming the timing wasn't right.

After all this time, the wedding was still just a fantasy. And today, I was here to bring the curtain down on the entire farce.

Any onlooker would be curious. But they could never know, or understand, that it only took a single night for my desperation to marry the man I'd loved for a decade to curdle into the firm resolve to call it all off.

What finally woke me up was the rare book on Graham's desk, kept under a glass dome.

Yesterday, while I was deep-cleaning our apartment, I accidentally knocked a cup of coffee off his desk. The brown liquid splashed across the book's dust jacket.

Before I could even lunge for a paper towel, Graham bolted out of the bedroom. He didn't ask if I was burned or steady me as I stumbled in panic. He just stared at the stain, his face contorting into a rage I had never seen.

"Alyssa Sinclair, are you so petty that you'd ruin my things just because I wouldn't take you to the Berkshires? Are you insane?" he roared.

I never got the chance to explain. He just told me to get out of his apartment. I stood outside the door all night, sending a flood of apology texts, only to be escorted away by building security for "harassing a resident."

To make up for my "mistake," I went online that night and ordered the same first-edition book at an exorbitant price. And just as I had after countless arguments, I wrote a heartfelt apology letter and mailed it to him.

But I received no reply.

Instead, the next morning, I saw Graham on another woman's Instagram.

His "study partner," Sadie Cole, had posted a photo carousel from a vintage-style record store. Tucked incongruously in the middle was a close-up of a book.

"Thanks to Graham for hunting down this out-of-print book for me! I absolutely love this gift! You're the only one in the world who remembers the little wishes I mention. (Sorry, haters, but this author was my first literary inspiration!)"

Less than a minute after she posted, Graham commented, "I'm glad you like it."

Sadie's reply was just as swift, "Thank you, Graham. I can't believe you remembered after I only mentioned it once. I'm so happy!"

Watching their exchange on the screen felt like someone had squeezed lemon juice directly into my eyes—it stung, souring my entire world.

Last month was my 33rd birthday. I had spent weeks dropping hints, my heart full of anticipation, hoping we could spend a romantic weekend for two in the Berkshires, even just in a simple B&B for one night.

And what did Graham say? He'd given me a surprised look, then said mockingly, "Alyssa, at your age, are you still chasing after some impractical, girlish fantasy? It's one thing for college kids to take pictures there, but you? We've been together for ten years. What novelty is left? Stop making a fuss."

His words landed like a slap. Yet, even so, on my birthday, he handed me an envelope.

I was ecstatic, thinking it was a sign that I was still special to him.

But inside was just a map of a nearby park with a free hiking trail circled in red.

And yet he took Sadie's casual wish to heart? That out-of-print book was worth thousands, and he bought it for her without a second thought.

In ten years as his girlfriend, I’d never received that kind of blatant, thoughtful favoritism.

Only then did I finally understand. The past decade had been nothing but my own one-woman show. And it was finally closing night.
