Chapter 2

The electronic click of the front door lock echoed through the silent penthouse.

Hilary didn't move from the living room sofa. She had changed out of the anniversary dress and into a loose silk pajama set that felt like armor.

Julian Carlisle stepped inside, his tall frame bringing a gust of the city's cold night air with him. He saw her sitting in the dark and paused before flipping on the entryway lights.

"Why are you still up?" he asked. His voice carried a familiar weariness, a carefully maintained distance.

She didn't answer, just watched him. After seeing that photograph, she realized she was looking at a stranger.

He tossed his suit jacket onto a chair, the casual gesture of a man who owned the world. The Patek Philippe on his wrist, a watch that could buy a small house, glinted under the light.

"Sorry," he said, walking towards her while loosening his tie. "An emergency meeting at the office ran late. I didn't have a chance to call."

The excuse was so worn, so utterly devoid of creativity.

An emergency meeting? she thought, a bitter laugh trapped in her throat. One that involved blue balloons and a birthday cake?

He reached the sofa and leaned down, aiming to place a perfunctory kiss on her forehead—his usual peace offering for a late arrival.

The instant before his lips could touch her skin, Hilary flinched back. The movement was sharp, involuntary.

Julian froze, his kiss landing on empty air. A flicker of surprise, then annoyance, crossed his face. His deep blue eyes narrowed.

"What's wrong?" He straightened up, looking down at her, brow furrowed as if her reaction was an unreasonable affront.

"I'm tired," Hilary said, her voice flat. She rose from the sofa, deliberately creating space between them.

The thought of his mouth—which had likely smiled at Annabel all evening—touching her skin made her stomach churn. Revulsion made it hard to breathe.

Julian's gaze fell on the dining table, on the two cold, untouched plates. A silent accusation.

His expression softened for a fraction of a second, perhaps a flicker of guilt. "I'm sorry about the anniversary," he said. "This weekend, I'll clear my schedule. We can go wherever you want."

He thought it was a grand gesture.

To Hilary, it was the ultimate insult.

"No, thank you," she replied, her voice as cold as the dinner on the table. "I have my own plans for the weekend."

Julian's patience snapped. He stepped forward and grabbed her wrist, his grip tight. "Hilary, don't be dramatic."

His hand was warm and dry, but his touch only made her recoil.

"Let go," she said, trying to pull away. The disparity in their strength was laughable. She was trapped.

"What is wrong with you tonight?" His irritation deepened. He saw her defiance not as a reaction to his betrayal, but as a challenge.

Hilary stopped struggling. She lifted her head and met his eyes. The blue eyes she had once drowned in now seemed foreign, tainted.

"I said," she repeated, each word a carefully placed stone, "I'm tired."

He stared at her for a long moment, searching for a crack in her composure. He found none. Just blank, chilling indifference.

Finally, he released her. "Fine," he said, his tone clipped.

Hilary immediately stepped back, rubbing the red marks on her wrist as if trying to wipe away his touch.

He unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt, revealing the hard line of his collarbone, and turned toward the bar. He poured himself a glass of whiskey.

"My mother is coming for lunch tomorrow," he said, his back to her. It wasn't a request; it was an order. "Make sure everything is ready."

Hilary didn't respond. She turned and walked toward the master bedroom.

As she passed him, she caught it—a faint, unfamiliar scent clinging to his clothes. A sweet, cloying perfume. Another woman's scent.

Her steps faltered. The scent caught in her throat like smoke.

She didn't turn. She didn't ask. She just quickened her pace, walked into the bedroom, and locked the door.

The lock clicked. Outside, Julian's whiskey glass hit the marble countertop.

Hilary leaned against the cold wood of the door, her body sliding down to the floor. She buried her face in her knees, tears finally falling, silent and hot.

It was the first time in three years she had ever locked him out.

Outside, Julian stood for a moment, his jaw tight. He heard the lock. He didn't knock. He simply turned and walked to the guest room. In his mind, this was just another game, a childish bid for attention.
