There was a time when Richard and I felt untouchable, like we were the perfect team. I met him during my second year at law school, at a charity gala I had been invited to by a friend. Richard had been the keynote speaker—a young, ambitious entrepreneur already making waves in the business world.

I’d been in awe of him at first—his commanding presence, his sharp wit, the way he could captivate an entire room with a single story. It wasn’t his success that drew me in; it was the way he had noticed me in a sea of people and made me feel like the only person in the room.

Our courtship had been a whirlwind and intense too. Late-night dinners at exclusive restaurants, stolen weekends at luxury resorts, and hours spent dreaming about the future. Richard had a way of making everything seem larger than life.

When he proposed a year later, it wasn’t just a declaration of love—it was a promise. A promise that we’d build something extraordinary together. And for a while, we did.

In those early years, Richard had been my everything. His company, Montgomery Industries, was thriving, I threw myself into supporting him in every way I could. I left law school to join the company’s legal team, together, we navigated the challenges of running a growing empire.

But somewhere along the way, Richard started changing.

It wasn’t sudden. At first, it was little things—the phone calls he took in another room, the way his answers to my questions became more clipped, more evasive. Then, the late nights became more frequent, and the warmth in his eyes when he looked at me began to fade.

I told myself it was the stress of running a billion-dollar company. Richard was under immense pressure, and I needed to be patient. Patience turned into doubt, and doubt turned into suspicion.

It was about six months ago when Cindy entered our lives. Richard introduced her as the company’s new PR consultant—a brilliant young strategist who had been brought on to revamp the company’s image after a series of minor scandals.

“She’s sharp,” Richard had said over dinner one night. “She’s exactly what we need right now.”

I had no reason to doubt him at first. Cindy was professional, polished, and polite. But there was something about her that set my teeth on edge. She had a way of looking at Richard that felt... too familiar, too intimate.

I brushed it off, telling myself I was imagining things. Then I started noticing the way Richard’s demeanor changed around her. The way he smiled more easily when she was in the room. The way his eyes lingered on her, just a little too long.

I confronted him once, early on. “Is there something I should know about Cindy?” I’d asked, trying to keep my tone light.

He’d laughed it off. “Of course not. She’s just good at her job.”

As the weeks went by, the signs became harder to ignore.

Richard began pulling away from me, both emotionally and physically. He’d stop coming home for dinner, claiming he was tied up in meetings. Weekends that used to be ours were suddenly filled with “work commitments.” And when he was home, he was distracted, his mind elsewhere.

It wasn’t just his absence that hurt—it was the way he stopped seeing me. I became an afterthought, a piece of furniture in the home we’d built together.

Cindy, on the other hand, was everywhere. She was at every company event, her presence magnetic and commanding. The employees loved her, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that her charm was calculated.

One night, Richard came home late, reeking of Cindy’s perfume. He didn’t notice when I stiffened as he kissed my cheek absentmindedly before retreating to his study.

The final straw came two months ago. I had been at the office late, wrapping up a presentation for a board meeting, when I overheard voices coming from one of the conference rooms.

Richard’s voice was low, soothing. “You don’t have to worry. I’ll handle everything.”

“Are you sure?” Cindy replied, her tone uncharacteristically vulnerable. “I don’t want to cause any problems.”

“You won’t,” he assured her. “We’re in this together.”

I froze, my stomach churning. Slowly, I stepped closer, peeking through the small window in the door.

Richard was sitting close to Cindy, his hand resting on her arm. The intimacy between them was undeniable.

I left before they could see me, my heart racing and my mind spiraling. That night, I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t.

I was afraid….I was afraid of losing him.

Now, standing in our home with Cindy’s ultrasound photo in my hand, the weight of everything came crashing down. This wasn’t just a betrayal—it was a complete dismantling of the life I thought we’d built together.
