A Car Crash Exposed His Betrayal Chapter 1

My mother-in-law had just finished a late-night community line dance when a drunk female driver dragged her body for nearly a mile.

By the time I received the call, Margaret Miller was already lying in the morgue, unrecognizable.

After watching the CCTV footage provided by the police, I clenched my teeth in rage, swearing to seek justice for Margaret.

But the very next day, my husband met me in a restaurant and slammed a document down in front of me.

“Rachel Miller, the dead can’t come back to life. Your mom is gone, but Sophia White is only twenty-one—she still has her whole future ahead of her. You can’t be so cruel as to make her youth pay for the life of a dead woman!”

“Sign the settlement. You’ll get $50,000 as compensation for your mom. That’s the end of it.”

“Otherwise, you won’t get a single penny!”

I didn’t sign.

Later, David Miller made good on his threat—I didn’t receive a cent.

But I saw him kneeling on the courthouse steps, smashing his head against the ground until it bled, begging for the case to be retried.

“You… what did you just say?”

“Fifty thousand? A settlement?”

I stared at David, stunned.

The one lying in the morgue was his own mother!

David had grown up poor. His father couldn’t handle the hard life and abandoned him when he was still in diapers.

It was Margaret who raised him all by herself.

For fear he might suffer, she never remarried.

“What? Too little?”

My lips trembled as I tried to explain, “This isn’t about the money, honey.”

“The one who died—she… she was our mom!”

I had worried he wouldn’t be able to handle the truth, so I’d spoken carefully.

But instead, he glanced at his watch and frowned impatiently.

“I know. You don’t have to keep repeating it.”

“If you don’t think it’s too little, then just sign the paper and don’t waste my time. I’ve got things to do.”

I blankly flipped open the agreement, unsure where to even begin reading.

Until one line made my pupils contract sharply.

It claimed Margaret bending over to tie her shoelace was an intentional scam.

That because she was “scamming,” she caught Sophia off guard while the girl was feeling unwell, which explained why Sophia didn’t notice what was happening.

It was absurd. A complete reversal of truth.

Clutching the thin sheet of paper, I asked David, “Did you even watch the surveillance video at the police station?”

He sipped his drink with irritation, slouched back in his chair, and raised his voice.

“Watch what? You expect me to watch your mom scamming someone?”

“An old lady trying to blackmail a young girl. Rachel, if you’re not embarrassed, I sure as hell am!”

“She wasn’t scamming anyone!”

“David, she raised you for over thirty years. No one knows what kind of woman she was better than you. Don’t insult her memory with this nonsense.”

People nearby began glancing over curiously.

I pushed the document back toward him.

Maybe his indifference rubbed off on me, because even my grief started to dull.

“Raised me? She was your mom. You’ve lost your mind, Rachel.”

I thought I had made myself clear, but he seemed incapable of understanding.

His tone grew harsher, then suddenly softened.

“Rachel, I know it’s hard to accept your mother-in-law’s passing, but you need to be rational.”

“She was old, contributed nothing to the family, and needed your support. She’d long since become a burden.”

“If she were alive, she couldn’t have made $5,000, let alone $50,000.”

“We need to be realistic. If you think fifty thousand is too little, then you name a price.”
