В 1920 году восемь мужчин, представлявших шесть колледжей штата Техас, собрались, чтобы обсудить студенческий спорт и многочисленные проблемы, с которыми столкнулись их вузы. К моменту завершения сессии в Хьюстоне они основали спортивную лигу, которая постепенно стала одной из ведущих спортивных ассоциаций в мире студенческого спорта – Юго-западную атлетическую конференцию.
SWAC считается одной из ведущих конференций HBCU в стране и в настоящее время входит в число лучших в стране по количеству выпускников HBCU, выступающих за профессиональные спортивные команды.
В настоящее время лига проводит чемпионаты по бейсболу, баскетболу, кроссу, футболу, гольфу, лёгкой атлетике в помещении, лёгкой атлетике на открытом воздухе и теннису среди мужчин. Женские соревнования проводятся по баскетболу, боулингу, кроссу, гольфу, лёгкой атлетике в помещении, лёгкой атлетике на открытом воздухе, футболу, софтболу, теннису и волейболу.
